About the Project
Reliable water level information is vital for understanding how tidal water flooding and inundation affect coastal wetlands. Despite the rich body of tidal wetland studies in the Reserve System, long-term availability of wetland feature-specific water level monitoring data has been minimal even for reserves with well-developed wetlands and water level monitoring programs. With access to high-precision, long-term water level monitoring data, reserves can document variability among tidal wetland features, ultimately informing potential restoration activities. To address this need, a transfer project employed a targeted training approach to install novel arm-and-float water level loggers and bring expertise in hydrodynamic monitoring and tidal datum calculation to seven reserves.
About this Resource
This project generated four datasets, including raw data outputs from each participating NERR, figures depicting outputs from water level loggers, tidal datums for each NERR, and maps of time lag and flood fraction at each deployment site. The dataset description provides more information about each dataset.
- Reserve/Year_Reserve_rawfiles: The datasets in each Reserve’s subfolder contain raw data outputs derived from Float and Arm Loggers (that use HOBO Pendant G accelerometers) for water surface elevation observations. Data have been made publicly available via the Centralized Data Management Office (CDMO).
- Figures depicting outputs from water level loggers: For those logger deployments that were deemed successful, there were three figure types generated from the raw water level logger files. Data have been made publicly available via the Centralized Data Management Office (CDMO).
- Tidal datums for each NERR, deployment date: Tide by tide method was used to calculate tidal ‘datums’ for each logger deployment site. Data have been made publicly available via the Centralized Data Management Office (CDMO).
- Maps of time lag and flood fraction at each deployment site: This dataset contains maps (in kml format) of each logger at each NERR. Data have been made publicly available via the Centralized Data Management Office (CDMO).
