Historical Maps, Technical Reports, and Geodatabases for Tracking Estuary Change

Historical Maps, Technical Reports, and Geodatabases for Tracking Estuary Change

About the Project

In collaboration with local reserve staff, technical advisors, and local and national partners, this project brought together local and historical knowledge to comprehensively map past and present estuarine habitat across all 30 NERRs. Project findings revealed regional differences in how estuaries have changed over time and suggest that multiple mapping methods complement each other and should be integrated to provide a more accurate understanding of estuaries—past, present and future. This project has strengthened strategic planning for estuarine habitat conservation and restoration at both national and local scales in the face of sea level rise and lake-level change.

About this Resource

The project generated three types of data for each of 30 NERRs: technical reports, historical maps, and geodatabases.

Individual datasets are available at the links below.

  1. Historical Maps: Historical maps ranging from years 1842 to 1926 for areas in or near 30 NERRs, available as high resolution image files for printing or presentations.
  2. Technical Reports: These reports detail mapping analyses conducted at each of the 30 Reserves and provide a summary habitat change findings at each reserve.
  3. Geodatabases: GIS files, including georeferenced historical maps, elevation based estuary extent, and National Wetland Inventory (NWI) classifications for each of the 30 NERRs and surrounding areas.

Additional details about the data including collection methods and locations can be found in the dataset description.
