Catalyst / Knowledge Exchange
Targeted investment for advancing collaborative science and knowledge exchange
Catalyst / Knowledge Exchange projects facilitate the development of new collaborative science ideas, amplify or enhance existing collaborative research efforts, or promote the use of science through knowledge exchange activities.
All proposals must adopt a user-driven approach, be grounded in reciprocal relationships, and meet a reserve management or knowledge exchange need.
To learn more about these types of projects, browse Catalyst and Science Transfer in our catalog.
The 2025 Request for Proposals is now closed
Projects may be 12 or 18 months with budgets ranging from $45,000 - $200,000. Budgets of $200,000 are expected to be most appropriate for projects involving three or more reserves.
Which objective type is right for my project idea?
To help you determine which objective type is the best fit for your project idea, we've created a decision tree:
How do I get started?
To help focus your project’s purpose, get to know user needs, and scope your project, here are a few helpful resources:
- 2025 Reserve Management & Knowledge Exchange Needs (webpage and PDF)
- Understanding user needs. Map out the needs of potential users with a template designed to identify their challenges, interests, and needs related to the management issue. A single project cannot address all needs, but this tool should help you hone in on a smaller set of primary users and a closely related set of challenges that a project could address.
- Question prompts to guide your background research and conversations with potential users.
- Twelve example problem statements to promote thinking about how to envision and design a new project.
