NERRS GHG Monitoring Protocol: Using portable sensors to measure CO2 greenhouse gas fluxes

About the Project

This multi-reserve catalyst project brought together five reserves to test new sensors that measure carbon dioxide, temperature, and humidity in salt marsh environments. Together the project team and the reserves worked to refine the new technology while collecting over 480 CO2 flux measurements across the New England reserves. This collaborative effort has resulted in increased capacity for NERR staff to collect in situ carbon flux data and strengthened protocols for SWMP biomonitoring.

About the Resource

This monitoring protocol describes the use of a lightweight, portable sensor package to measure changes in CO2 concentrations across the salt marsh-air interface. Developed in collaboration with five New England reserves, the protocol explains how the ultra-portable sensor package can be deployed during other routine marsh monitoring or on-going research efforts. The written protocol is accompanied by a video demonstration (YouTube).
